International Self-Care Day is observed on July 24th each year. Here at Arbor Family Counseling, we encourage and promote self-care all year round! Self-care looks different for each person and in this article, we will explore options that best fit your needs.
Self-care is an important part of having and maintaining both positive mental, physical, and emotional health. The saying “you cannot pour from an empty cup” rings true in regard to self-care. If you are feeling stressed, mentally drained, or even physically unwell, you cannot give your all to your friends, family, or career.
Self-care is the practice of an individual looking after their own health using the resources and knowledge available to them. The chosen method of self-care is determined by the individual, sometimes in coordination with a health or mental health professional.
Making a list of your personal needs is a great starting point for determining what type of self-care is needed. However, there are a few main strategies to follow if you don’t know where to begin.
- Prioritizing sleep – a well-rested mind and body helps regulate your mood, reduces stress hormones and anxiety, and improves your emotional regulation
- Establishing and managing connections – seeking support from friends, family, or even a mental-health professional during difficult times makes you feel less alone and boosts moods
- Exercise or moving your body – find activities that you enjoy to help break up your day, make you feel good, and increase endorphins
- Healthy eating and staying hydrated – when we treat our bodies right, we feel better, perform better, sleep better, and can think more clearly
- Seeking extra help if needed – never hesitate to ask for help when needed. Arbor Family Counseling has many counselors available with a broad range of specialties to fit your needs and to be a support system for you
